I have always been fascinated by the concept of creation, and this concept motivates me and fuels my God-given passion for music. To conceive of a musical idea seemingly from thin air, to volley it around in my head where it snowballs into a song with lyrics and form, to record it and layer it with instruments, to mix it, to master it, and finally to release it—this process is an adventure each and every time. It's an added bonus if a song makes its home in people's minds and hearts.

This creation process applies to this collection as a whole. It was conceived in 2004 initially as a double-CD chronological collection—with the working title of The Many Phases of David Wu—but suffered a series of delays. The idea evolved into what you are hearing now: an online non-chronological collection that serves as a retrospective of (or in many cases, an introduction to) my music career to date.

"You're never really done for... as long as you’ve got a good story and someone to tell it to."
—from The Legend of 1900
These 20 songs are merely the tip of a massive iceberg of archived recordings, spanning my years as a young concert pianist, a producer, and a songwriter.

I don’t dwell in the past, but it is compelling for me to look back on my life’s work (so far), and to hear how I evolved musically and spiritually over the years. It was important to me to close this chapter of my life while looking back on it fondly, as I move forward to new phases in life and music.

Whether you are listening now or in the future, I hope that this album will touch your lives—and inspire you to pursue your dreams, attempt the impossible, and have faith in God. It also gives me the chance to say thanks to all those who have made an impact on me (some of whom graciously shared their talents for these songs), in big ways and in little ways. You know who you are. And if I haven’t said it, then I’ll say it here: You’ve meant the world to me.

This album is a celebration of life, love and music. Enjoy it, now and forever. And here's to creation.

The title for this song came first. It was originally written to be the title track for The Many Phases of David Wu. That album title was aborted, and the project itself evolved into this 20/20 collection.

MORE THAN JUST FRIENDS
Rose Marie
Words/Music by David Wu
Single only
4:22 / MP3
2008
Age 30
This was originally a breakup song entitled "I've Come Around," and was recorded in 2005 by another vocalist. The song didn't see the light of day for 3 years, after which I re-wrote the lyrics. I composed the instrumental in such a way that would break the monotony of a dull, continuous loop.
03
WORD OF HONOR
MadPoet
Lyrics by MadPoet, Music by David Wu
From the album Bourne Again 1994-1998
2:42 / MP3
1995
Age 16
I had the honor of composing and producing MadPoet's instrumentals, as he had a decent local following during the years 1994-1998. He would perform this song live, with the crew BOSS breaking alongside him. They once won a contest with this song.

KAHAPON
Tiiktak
Lyrics by Ricky Guevarra, Music by Ricky Guevarra & David Wu
From the album Dynastiik
4:52 / MP3
2002
Age 23
As of today, March 2009, this song is the only one I've ever produced to ever hit the radio waves—in Manila, that is. Some listeners called in to request the song a few more times. I didn't write any of the lyrics (being that they are in Tagalog)—they belong to the brilliant Ricky Guevarra a.k.a. Tiiktak—but I wrote a huge section of the music including the bridge, and of course arranged the whole song.

CHOPIN: VALSE

From the album Piano Anthology 1984-1994
3:04 / MP3
1991
Age 13
This is one of my favorite Romantic-era pieces, and this performance was filmed at home at my family's piano. Take note that all of the classical/Romantic-era songs on this collection were performed from memory.

Age 28
I wrote this song while jogging around Greenlake in Seattle.
07
SANTERIA (Live at Koffee Pot)
Fake Mondays
Words/Music by Bradley Nowell
Myspace only
3:12 / MP3
2004
Age 26
This band Fake Mondays had a knack for rotating personnel and changing its name every year. My stint on the band yielded some live recordings at the Koffee Pot bar in Georgetown, Seattle—and this one is my favorite of the bunch. The band members: me on organ, Marco Canto on guitar, Kris Capiendo on bass, Hubie on drums, Phil Dizon on vocals.

SCHUBERT: IMPROMPTU (Live at Admiral Church)
David Wu
Music by Franz Schubert
From the album Piano Anthology 1984-1994

Age 14
My fingers would always be tired by the end of my 7-minute performances of this song.

CHOPIN: ETUDE (Live at Tibbetts UMC)
David Wu
Music by Frédéric Chopin
From the album Piano Anthology 1984-1994

Age 14
I used to get a lot of requests from friends and family to play this.

Words/Music by David Wu, Rap Lyrics by Spaz-O-Matic & emersonIC
From the album Dynastiik
5:13 / MP3
2002
Age 23
This is a song about self-control. I wrote it based on some experiences I had at parties in the early 2000s. I performed and arranged the entire instrumental in the dark in my bedroom.
11
LORD, TELL ME I'M DREAMIN'
MadPoet
Lyrics by MadPoet, Music by MadPoet & David Wu
From the album Bourne Again 1994-1998
3:45 / MP3
1996
Age 17
As far as MadPoet's repertoire went, this was the darkest of the bunch. Its live incarnation included six "grim reapers"—I was one of them—twirling torches around the rapper.
12
MOZART: SONATA I (Live at Tibbetts UMC)
David Wu
Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
From the album Piano Anthology 1984-1994
6:20 / MP3
1989
Age 12
I also performed this song live for a talent show at Denny Middle School, and I was the most popular 6th grader for a week—no joke.
13
MOZART: CONCERTO IN F (Live at Tibbetts UMC)
David Wu
Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
From the album Piano Anthology 1984-1994
5:38 / MP3
1988
Age 10
Out of the 20 songs on this collection, this is the first one in the chronological order. By this time, I had been a pianist for more than 5 years. That's my piano teacher, Mr. John Van Lierop, Jr., performing the orchestral section on the pipe organ at Tibbetts United Methodist Church.
14
UNTIL U R MINE (Extended Version)
Tiiktak feat. emersonIC
Words/Music by Ricky Guevarra & David Wu, Rap lyrics by emersonIC
Not previously released; original version appears on the album Dynastiik
4:29 / MP3
2001
Age 23
This version combines the best bits of the original LP track and a remix. I composed the instrumental during the days following 9/11. I don't usually sing on anything I produce, but I provided the bulk of the background vocals for this one, including the high "one for me... all I see..."
15
CAN YOU STAND THE RAIN (By Request)
David Wu
Words/Music by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis
From the EP
David Wu By Request
4:02 / MP3
2004
Age 26
I held a contest on MySpace, for which the first three ladies who requested a song were "serenaded" by me on the piano. This song—requested by my friend Sharon—had a good reception with those who heard it.
16
EPIS. 1.04:
THE ARRIVAL (Parody of Gold Digger)

The Fringemunks
Words/Music by Kanye West, Ray Charles & Renald Richard; parody lyrics by David Wu
From the album
The Fringemunks: Season 1
3:35 / MP3
2008
Age 30
In perhaps my craziest project—no worries, it's also the one that has gotten me the most exposure online—I recap each episode of FOX's TV series Fringe with a song parody. All this, under the guise of three "Fringemunks" named Feebo, Notchy and Pie (it's really my voice sped up). This particular recap made some people smile around the world.
17
GRIEG: CONCERTO (Live at Tibbetts UMC)
David Wu
Music by Edvard Grieg
From the album Piano Anthology 1984-1994
10:10 / MP3
1993
Age 14
I included this one because it contains some of the most technically difficult sequences of music I have ever played. Again, that's Mr. Van Lierop performing the orchestral section on organ.
18
A NEW CREATION (Live in Silverdale)
Papuri!NW Band feat. Dione Ricardo Corsilles
Words/Music by David Wu
Not previously released; original version appears on the album Papuri!NW 2002
3:32 / MP3
2004
Age 25
In 2002, I entered a Christian songwriting contest run by Papuri!NW in which the 10 best songs were to be included in a CD project. This song made it onto that collection in 2002, and was indeed the first Christian song I'd ever written. It's about being born again. (See 2 Cor. 5:17 for the corresponding Bible verse.) This live version features me on piano, Isaac Granadosin on drums, Josh Granadosin on bass, and background vocals by Bridget Hermano and Amber Granadosin.
19
IF I CAN MOVE THE MOUNTAINS
James Fernando
Words/Music by David Wu
MySpace only; original version by Joyce Malana appears on the album Papuri!NW 2003
5:01 / MP3
2005
Age 27
I entered the same Papuri!NW songwriting contest in 2003—this time with 2 songs, "Brace Yourself!" and this one—and they both made it onto that year's 10-song collection. This song also won the grand prize.
20
DYNASTIIK
Tiiktak & Tina Cornejo feat. The Text Messengers
Words/Music by David Wu; Rap Lyrics by Miguel Colón, St. Ace, Christian St. Jacques & Dural Thomas
From the album Dynastiik
5:10 / MP3
2003
Age 24
Out of all the songs I've produced, this is the one that involved the most people—11. The song was title track for Tiiktak's debut album, a bold placement being that it is overtly spiritual. I wrote the song in sets of 3 bars, to signify the Trinity of course! Instrumentalists: me on keyboards, DJ Smerk on percussion/bass, EJ Galeon on guitar, and Sidney & Sherry-Lyn Basa on violins.

Additional Credits:
  • DJ Smerk: recording engineer for Tracks 4, 10, 14 and 20
  • Al Di Meola: recording engineer for Track 7
  • Joe Wu: sound recorder for Tracks 5, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 17
